Recap on Back to School Night...

Hello parents!
Thank you to all the parents and students who were able to make it to Back to School Night.  It was wonderful to meet all of you!  I am posting the hand out that was given to the parents last night simply to reiterate the Homework and Attendance Policies to all parents and students.  Please continue to keep up with my Blog, as it will have updates and photos of student assignments (both in-class and assigned homework) as well as the dates for upcoming field trips and school events.  Please remember that each month there will be a REQUIRED meeting for upper grade parents (particularly for 8th grade) in regard to fundraising events and financing opportunities for the upcoming year events.  Let’s make this year your child’s most memorable by providing opportunities to grow and experience the beautiful world God has blessed us with.  It would be an amazing experience for 8th graders this year to go on TWO, not just one, extended field trip.  I believe fully in our capabilities as a team to get these students to places that will inspire them to grow as individuals as they venture on this path towards young adulthood.  With Christ always at the center of everything, this year will be the best it can possibly be.

If parents have any concerns, or questions, please contact me as I would be happy to discuss anything that may help contribute to the development of your child.  Thank you again, and have a wonderful weekend.

I expect to see all of the students on the first day of school (Tuesday).  Remember that ATTENDANCE is VITAL to the academic SUCCESS of your child.

~The Following is What Parents Received on Back To School Night~

“Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” 1st Timothy 4:12

Hello Families and welcome to the 8th grade!

My name is Elise Beltran, and I am the 8th grade teacher.  I have spent the last several years earning both a B.A. in English Literature, and an M.A. in Composition with a focus in Literature.  I am also well-educated in Linguistics, as well as Teaching English as a Second Language.  In the past, I have interned at California State University teaching core English courses at the Junior and Senior level in college.  While my passion is toward English Literature, I spent a good part of my degree studying historical narratives as well as science fiction, both of which I will be utilizing in this class as a means to bring both Science and History to life in the classroom.  I also feel passionate about Algebra, and hope to instill the same level of passion and excitement in your children.  That said, I will be teaching your child: Bible, Reading, Algebra, History and Physical Science.  Mrs. Barr will be focusing on the Literature Reader, while the students will journey with me through a variety of historical narratives.  The goal in Reading is that a sense of empathy and understanding be extracted out of the history your child will be engaging in this year.  The hope is to create a history that is 3-dimensional and not flat.

The Bible passage above is meant to give a general idea for you to understand the theme and expectations for the next year.  I expect each young man and woman in this class to set a positive example for the rest of the school.  They are certainly capable leaders and most importantly, they are ambassadors of Christ and are expected to be dutiful in all they do.  That said, I have several policies that you and your child should be made aware of.  Please adhere to the following:

Homework Policies:

Late work WILL NOT be accepted.  Homework is due on the due date assigned.  My e-mail address has been provided, and should your child be absent on the day something has been assigned, it is expected that the assignment be e-mailed to me.  I will accept a picture text-message, so long as the picture is clear enough to see that the work has actually been completed on time.  If your child is absent on the day something new is assigned, they will be allowed to turn the assignment in the following day of their return. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Attendance Policy:

Parents: Attendance is vital to the success of your child in EVERY subject.  Please encourage your child to attend regularly and please be ON TIME.  Three tardies will count as ONE absence.  Should attendance and tardiness become a problem the proper school and state authorities will be informed.  As a bonus, every month the class has perfect attendance A CLASS PARTY will occur.

Disciplinary Procedures:

Should a situation arise where a student has multiple warnings and losses of recess, a meeting will be made with the student, parents, Principal and teacher, and a Behavioral Contract will be signed and enacted.

Parents, while this all may seem strictly dire, let me assure you that your child is quickly on the path to adulthood.  To allow misbehavior at this age to continue does nothing more than create a disadvantage in your child’s mental and spiritual development. Please encourage your child to behave respectfully and attend regularly.

                Class Incentives:

·         Class Reaches One Month of Perfect Attendance: Class Party!!!

·        “Beltran Bucks” and our monthly Class Auction: Throughout the day students will be able to earn “Beltran Bucks.”   They can use “Beltran Bucks” to purchase items at our monthly Class Auction (Parents are more than welcome to donate items for the auction).

·        Class Behavior Points: Positive behavior and “good day” points will earn a Movie Day for the class!

Parents and students, I am looking forward to this year with immense excitement.  I am interested in seeing the amazing things God has planned for this class.  Together we will build spiritually and intellectually mature young adults who can steadfastly endure and overcome the storms that are inevitably a part of growing.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,

~Miss Beltran
